Frequently Asked Questions

Lesson Questions Here are the answers to some of the most common questions we get from interested students and parents about lessons. How much are the lessons? How do I pay? Lessons are $60/month for a four-week month, and $75/month when there are five lessons per month. Tuition must be paid by either automatic Debit or Credit Card payment. We will also accept a series of post-dated checks for the month of lessons, due at least two weeks prior to the following month’s lessons. Tuition will be debited from your Debit/Credit card on the first day of each month.

How many do I have to come for?

Lessons are 1/2 hour long, and we have you come just once a week because you need time to practice between lessons. There is a one-month minimum for all lessons, and two weeks notice prior to the following month is required to discontinue classes.

How young is too young?

Adults can start any instrument at any time. Their success is based on how willing an adult is to commit to practicing. We teach many beginner students in their 60’s and 70’s. For children, starting at the right age is a key element to the success of their lessons. Some people will tell you “the sooner the bet- ter,” but this attitude can actually backfire and be a negative. If a child is put into lessons too soon they may feel overwhelmed and frustrated and want to stop lessons. The last thing you want to do is turn a child off of music just be- cause they had one unpleasant experience which could have been prevented. Sometimes if the child waits a year to start lessons their progress can be much faster. Call us, and we can give your more guidelines for specific instruments in accordance to a student’s age.

Are they group lessons?

No. Each lesson is an individual, half-hour lesson, that way the student can re- ceive the teacher’s full attention and the lesson can be tailored to the student’s needs.

When are the lessons?

Lessons are Monday – Saturday, and every teacher has a different schedule. In general, the most common lesson times based on an after-school schedule, but there are teachers who have earlier times in the afternoon open also. On Saturdays, we’re open from 10-5 and have teachers here all day.

What times are available?

The times available depend on the individual teacher’s schedule, which is dif- ferent for each teacher. If a specific time or instructor you want is currently unavailable, we will be happy to put you on a waiting list until a desirable time spot opens up.

Are the teachers experienced?

Definitely. All of our teachers are established musicians at all different levels in their careers – everything from professional opera singers to local rockers who have been playing since childhood. When you set up lessons, we try to match you or your child with a teacher that will be able to teach them the style of music they want to play.

Do I have to pay for the lessons if I don’t come ?

We have you pay for the entire month at the beginning of the month, and if you miss a lesson you simply reschedule it at the front counter or by phone. Make-up lessons will be limited to one per quarter (every three months), in the same quarter that the lesson was missed. No refunds will be given for missed lessons that are not made up. If your teacher is unavailable, the School reserves the right to provide a substitute teacher. If we can’t provide a substi- tute, any missed classes will be made up.

What about holidays?

On most major holidays, lessons are cancelled. All announcements regarding School closings are posted on our Student Bulletin Board downstairs, and reminders are often sent home with students. You can also get a copy of this year’s schedule for School Closings at the front desk.

Do I have to have my own instrument?

You need to have your own instrument so that you can practice at home. We carry all sorts of new and used instruments for purchase, and many band instruments are available for children to rent. If you’re interested in renting please see us or call for more information.

Where are the lessons?

Lessons are downstairs, where we have sixteen private studios equipped with keyboards, guitar amps, and drum sets. We also have one studio upstairs that is wheelchair accessible.

Where do I wait for my child?

You can wait for anyone taking lessons downstairs, where there are tables and chairs, or browse around the store. The School is not responsible for providing before or after-class care for students, and parents with students under the age of eight are required to remain in the School during classes.

What else will we need for lessons?

You may need to buy a book and necessary accessories for playing, for exam- ple: picks and a new cord for someone who plays electric guitar. As mentioned before, we have amps, keyboards, and drum sets downstairs, so all you need to bring are the appropriate accessories. Students with band instruments need to have their instruments with them when they arrive.

Who do I speak to if I need to reschedule a lesson?

If you should need to reschedule a lesson, simply talk to one of the girls at the counter or call us anytime at 814-459-2585 . If you call when we are closed, just leave a message with your phone number and we will call you back to reschedule.
